     Phase 1 focuses on improving the efficiency of the individual components in the system. These pictures illustrate some of the effects from the inefficient equipment operation in a system that will have a dramatic effect on the energy efficiency.

     The picture above shows a cooling tower wet deck with low water flow rate. The picture below shows the resulting foul buildup from operating the cooling tower under low water conditions.

  • The cooling tower's low water flow rate affected the liquid-to-gas ratio and heat transfer capacity of the cooling tower.
  • This fouling of the cooling tower resulted in the operation of an additional chiller, pumps, and an extra cooling tower to compensate for the loss in heat rejection capacity.
  • The addition of this excess equipment caused the system to operate under part-load performance.
